The Scottish Licensed Trade Benevolent Society, known as The BEN, has received a significant funding boost after it raised £15,000 at its popular annual race day.

Hosted at Ayr Racecourse, the event, sponsored by Tennent Caledonian, saw 200 guests enjoy a day of fine dining and high-octane racing in the sunshine as they raised money for the charity in support of its services and recently launched Glass Half Full campaign which aims to increase the number of people helped by The BEN.

Established in 1864, The BEN has been providing social, financial and emotional support to members of the licensed trade for over 150 years. Financially, the charity offers regular discretionary payments as well as one-off grants for emergency situations such as housing repairs or transport costs. To be eligible for support, applicants must have worked in the licensed trade (incorporating bars, pubs, restaurants, hotels, wholesalers plus packaging, production and distribution firms) for at least three years on a full-time basis. The three years do not need to be concurrent.

The Glass Half Full campaign is targeting current and former members of the licensed trade who have fallen on hard times through illness, unemployment or other factors, and would benefit from financial aid. The charity is calling on anyone who may be eligible, or know someone who might qualify, to get in touch regarding possible support.

Commenting on the day, Chris Gardner, The BEN’s chief executive said: “The race day is always a fantastic event and one of the most popular in our calendar. I’d like to say a big thank you to our sponsors Tennent Caledonian for their ongoing support and to Ayr Racecourse for putting on another great event for our guests.

“Obviously, our guests make the day what it is and their generosity is extremely appreciated as the money raised will have a significantly positive impact on many lives. We also hope it will help us support more people through our recently launched Glass Half Full campaign which is encouraging potential beneficiaries from across Scotland to get in touch and discuss possible financial aid.”
